How to Order Greeting Cards From the White House

How to Order Greeting Cards From the White House The White House Greetings Office will send greeting cards signed by the President of the United States to commemorate special events, accomplishments or milestones free of charge to U.S. citizens. While the existence and basic function of the White House Greetings Office have remained largely unchanged over the years, each new  presidential administration may deal with greeting requests differently. However, the basic guidelines are rarely changed.   To request a greeting card from the President, just follow these guidelines from the White House Greetings Office. Trump Administration As part of the 2017 presidential transition, the White House website team has at least temporarily removed pages referencing the White House Greetings Office, including the online greeting card request form and instructions. Should the Donald Trump administration restore the online request function, the details will be posted here.  Ã‚   Alternatively, greeting cards signed by the President can be requested through the offices all U.S. Representatives and Senators. For details, either contact their offices or refer to the â€Å"Constituent Services† section of their websites. How to Submit Requests There are currently two  ways to request a presidential greeting: Requests may be submitted through the Constituent Services function of one of the U.S. Senators or U.S. Representatives from your state.Requests can also be mailed, at least six weeks in advance of the event to: White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C. 20500. Guidelines for Submitting Requests U.S. Citizens Only:  The White House will send greetings to United States citizens only, for special occasions as outlined below. Advance action required:  Your request should be received at least six (6) weeks in advance of the event date. (Greetings are generally not sent after the event date, except for wedding congratulations and newborn acknowledgments.) Anniversary greetings: Anniversary greetings will be sent to couples who are celebrating a 50th, 60th, 70th or later wedding anniversary. Birthday greetings: Birthday greetings will be sent only to people turning 80 or older or veterans turning 70 or older. Other greetings: A limited number of special occasions other than birthdays and anniversaries exist for which the Greetings Office will send appropriate recognition to United States citizens. These occasions include important life events such as: Wedding (Do not  send your request until after the wedding.)Babys birth or adoption of a childRetirement after at least 30 years on the same jobEagle Scout AwardGirl Scout Gold AwardBar/Bat Mitzvah or equivalent religious occasion Required information: Please include the following in your request. Name and home address of honoree(s)Form of address (Mr., Ms., Mrs., Dr., Miss, etc.)Exact date of occasion (month, day, year)Age (birthdays) or number of years of marriageYour (the requestors) name and daytime phone numberAny specific mailing instructions if other than to honorees addressWedding (Include couples married names and current or new address) How Long Will it Take? Typically, signed greeting cards should arrive within six  weeks after being requested. The White House Office requires that requests be made at least six weeks before the date of the event to be commemorated. However, actual delivery times can vary greatly and requests should always be submitted as far in advance as possible. For example, at one point during the first term of the Obama administration, the Greetings Office announced it was â€Å"swamped† with requests and stated that it could take â€Å"several months† for requests to reach the Greetings Office and be mailed out. So, in all cases and no matter whos in the White House, the best advice is to plan ahead and order early.

How to Forget an Insult

How to Forget an Insult Free Online Research Papers Insult is an important social and organizational phenomenon, which causes powerful emotions and enters peoples personal histories. The definition of an insult is to treat someone with gross insensitivity, insolence, or contemptuous rudeness. It refers to an action which a person perceives as demeaning to his or her status. Insult involves a perpetrator, a target and often, an audience. Insults can be verbal, comprising of invective, negative stereotyping and rudeness or swearing. The intention to insult is not necessary, as some insults are the result of misunderstanding or accident. Even more potent insults result from the defamation or despoiling of idealized objects, persons or ideas. Historically, insults have packed a powerful political, social and cultural punch. They have caused wars, civil disturbance and been central dynamics in great works of literature and art. Beyond their power on the group level, they have devastating power on the individual level. An insult can provoke an extreme reaction in its recipient such as an act of violence, a resulting feud, a suicide, a resignation, etc. On a less extreme level, it can cause anxiety, depression and erode confidence. It is hard to forget when we feel insulted, but unless we can move on we only increase our own suffering. However, there are some ways that can help to forget an insult and get on with life free from bitterness. The most effective way to forget an insult is to resolve the problem. This approach is based on the assumption that causes must be rooted out and relationship must be patched up. In this process we have to find out the reason behind that incident and who is responsible for that. If the victim is himself responsible for the event, then he can take necessary measures to correct himself. But if he is not found guilty, then he has to find out the reasons from the insulter’s point of view. Psychological and social barriers can be responsible for such kind of coarse behavior. People’s background, perceptions, values, biases, needs and exceptions differ from one another. Childhood experiences may result in negative feelings towards a particular behavior, racial prejudice, and opposite sex. Family and personal problem such as poor health, alcoholism, lack of sleep and emotional strain may be so upsetting that one may not be able to control his manners. Or the person might have done it just out of his jealous. The victim has to find out the exact reason behind the incident and talk to the insulter with a sincere sensitivity towards his emotion. The victim has to make him understand that what he did was wrong and make him feel sorry for that. In some cases the victim may be surprised to see the person who insulted him is also feeling guilty for his act but cannot express it out of fear or shyness. Resolving the problem is thus a great way of forgetting an insult. It is also useful to build a peaceful and healthy relationship in the society. Another paramount way to forget an insult is to forgive the person who once insulted you. In order for us to forget the person who hurt us, we must clear the resentment and hatred. When we forgive, we clear the air and open new doors so we can move along to new places with new people. Having forgiven the person for past events and actions, we can take all necessary actions to stop us from being harmed in the future. Forgiveness clears the past which is unchangeable and in fact allows us better to take the optimal action in the future. Forgiveness is an act of courage which allows us to move on out of harms way. It is a way of going from the past to the present and then moving on towards the future. The real point of any event is to learn whatever lesson exists in that event and then to move on. When we hold onto negative emotions and memories we end up harming ourselves much more than we could ever hurt or harm the other person. Thus we give the other person huge amount of power over us and we further victimize ourselves. When we forgive, we free ourselves from the other person and our self-esteem immediately gets a boost. Sometimes it is found that the person who is being insulted is himself responsible for everything. In that case, it is a relatively easy task for that person task to forget the insult and to take corrective action so that such incident never happens in the future. But if the person who is being insulted is not actually responsible for the incident to take place, the complexity begins. In this case, the insulted has to try and find something positive out of that event. In this way he might transform this unpleasant event into a constructive one. Avoiding the person who insulted you can help a lot to forget the insult. In many cases when he sees the person who insulted him, the victim may feel the need to seek revenge. The victims symptoms may be anger, discouragement, and frustration and this may cause harm to him. If he can avoid that person, then he will be able to make himself free from the harmful effects of anger. And without being seen him for a long time the victim can actually forget that insult and the person as well. Avoiding the place of incident can help us to forgetting an incident. When we go to a place, we try to recall the memories related to that place. This is a natural process of human being. That means if we do not go to place, we need not have to remember the incidents. In this way, if we can avoid the place where the incident took place for a long time, we will be able to forget that incident in the passage of time. All the procedures mentioned above can help a great deal to forget an insult. But still there are some people to whom these procedures are simply impossible to comply with. They cannot easily forgive or just forget the incident. They always look for revenge and possess the idea that it may satisfy their anger. These people are best suited to the ‘eye- for-an-eye’ approach. The way is easy and simple, yet destructive. First observe the person vigilantly who insulted you, search for his flaws or compel him to make a mistake and then wait for the proper time and opportunity to come. When he will appear amidst a lot of people, insult the person revealing his faults in the way he insulted you. This can help a great deal to forget an insult. In this case, forgetting an insult means not remembering it again in the future rather than obliterating it entirely from mind. But this approach should not be carried out by anyone, at anytime or in any situation. This will only increase hostility and conflict within the society. It is better not to be violent under such a situation of insult, because violence may create greater chaos that may harm relationships as well as social piece and harmony. We should analyze the incident and take it as the behavioral aspect of a human being who has committed this without having any deeper knowledge on how to behave properly. Therefore, we should try to develop our mental calm and acquire wisdom to look into these types of situations with a sense of forgiveness to create an example of greatness and forgiveness. The Politics of Delinquency Prevention in America Essay

The Politics of Delinquency Prevention in America - Essay Example Delinquency, to be very specific, juvenile crime is on the rise in America by the year or it so appears, is more or less the common prelude of all statements of general public, elected officials, Juvenile Justice Department, child welfare and child care workers and advocates. It is time everyone had asked a question to one self; how can I help bring down juvenile delinquency? The answer is simple and clear – Honesty in approach. General public/parents that are the beneficiaries and benefactors of delinquency prevention must be honest and committed in their vision and approach. All parents must be aware of one simple fact that although their children are being protected in the best possible ways, they are exposed to other children who may have delinquency tendencies. A look at the risk factors contributing to delinquency emerging from pregnancy/infancy to toddler years to midchildhood, parents play a larger role. From midchildhood to midaddolescence apart from parents, school and community start contributing their share. If parents are extra cautious, influence of school/peer and community could be minimized. Parents can act as PANACEA to the problem of delinquency by demanding honesty and commitment in their approach for clear vision of the programmes. Parents/public must voice their feelings and play pro-active role in the design of content and approach of these programmes. They must also insist on the Government to give top priority to child care and child welfare programmes. Further, they must also mount pressure on the elected officials to be honest in their vision and approach toward these programmes cutting across party line and

Advanced Financial Reporting Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 1

Advanced Financial Reporting - Essay Example These standards are promulgated not by individuals but they are formed by a committee which includes people from all walks of life. The reason behind this is that inclusion of people from all walks of life is that this committee wants to create principles or accounting laws which are helpful for everyone in the every field of life. There are several organizations which work day-in and day- out for developing such principles. These principles give much more meaning to the financial statement and provide value to the financial figures contained in these statements. One such organization is International Accounting Standard Board, IASB, which was formed in 2001. The purpose of this organization was to propose different accounting standards which might be the basis of preparation of financial statements. Since, these rules are followed by all the business; they make the comparisons between two businesses more useful and more accurate. The IASB Handbook describes the consultative arrangements of the IASB. The Trustees’ Procedures Committee is in charge of regularly reviewing and updating the IASB due process procedures. (IASB.org) In the times of recession also, these standards have become very important in the valuation of various businesses and in giving meaning to the financial statement prepared by these businesses. Some people still favor the fact that these accounting standards are really useful for the interpretation financial prepared by various businesses headed by different accountants having different mind-set and company policies, where as others people hold the view that these accounting standards only distort the financial picture of these businesses and give an unrealistic picture of theses businesses, in the times of recession. They oppose these standards because they think that certain accounting standards ‘window dress’ the actual position of the business, and can be misleading for the users of financial statement. The Ethnography of Anthropology Essay Example for Free

The Ethnography of Anthropology Essay As with the study of any anthropological culture, with ethnography there are no set methods for documenting that culture or human societies, but much can be said about the methods of attempting to understand a culture by investigating how, exactly, that culture is unique. This tact can take the form of looking into a society’s housing conditions, how they raise their children, how they are educated, what types of religions they may follow, and even how they might bury their dead. In this, ethnographic studies have virtually taken the form of historical case studies—placing a culture down on paper as if the writer were there and intimately understood the culture. With that said, a look will now be taken into a few of the major ethnographies and the methods of the anthropologists that conduct the research within them. It has been said that a degree in anthropology would not be complete without an understanding of ethnographic research and the art of defining a culture down to its smallest and most fundamental aspects. From that ideal, the study of ethnography branched into an understanding of cultural mores (more than studying how and why people bury their dead), and a look was taken into how a society might communicate (both verbally and nonverbally). For example, if an ethnographer were to study high school students of the twenty-first century, they might notice that the cell phone forms the lifeline of communication among the young in society, and from it, an entirely new language of the â€Å"instant message† was formed—a language that most modern day â€Å"elders† do not comprehend or understand. In this, an ethnographer might note the disconnect between the young and the old in America today. And that, in its most basic form, is the basis for ethnographic research and just one method for employing ethnography to study a culture. Now, a look will now be taken into a few of the anthropologists that were essential for the major ethnographies along with a comparison of their research methods, successes, and failures. To begin with, Annette B. Weiner wrote â€Å"The Trobrianders of Papua New Guinea† as an ethnographic study of the relationships between man and woman and their differing perspectives (and courting rituals) including a somewhat feminist approach on the value of a woman and her work within their society. In 1990, Weiner’s ethnographic work was made into a documentary which focused â€Å"on [unexpected] Trobriand social practices – female exchange, mourning practices, cricket, magic, competition between male chiefs, marriage, Christianity on the island – to provide a picture of modern Trobriand society† (Alexy, 2002, par. 1). When Weiner began her research of the Trobriand culture, she â€Å"had planned to research tourism and local crafts† (par. 2), while instead she found herself drawn into â€Å"explicit and overwhelming female exchange†¦ a ritual mourning ceremony directed by women† (par. 2). In Weiner’s studies, her research also reveals â€Å"other dimensions of Trobriand society beyond these ritual exchanges† (par. 4 ). In this, Weiner’s ethnography goes beyond the traditional mode of one aspect of the culture and instead encompasses a vast amount of the societal mores of the Trobriand. Her failings, if there are any, can be defined by the purely feminine approach to her studies, as even the documentary is filmed from the female perspective, which, ultimately, excludes a great deal of the male perspective and culture from her ethnography. Sharon Graham Davies wrote â€Å"Challenging Gender Norms: Five Genders among the Bugis in Indonesia† as a case study in cultural anthropology to demonstrate the larger value of multiple genders within the society of Sulawesi, on the Indonesian Island versus the two genders that most societies recognize. Essentially, there is the traditional male and female, and then the Bugis also encompass and recognize the androgynous Shaman, and the male and female transgendered (including gay and lesbian) within their society. For their part, the Bugis can be seen as a liberal New York City melting pot of genders, without judgment, and without shame for their chosen paths in life. Davies, in her ethnology, represents a new theory on the ideal of gender and the social mores founded within each, enlightening the subject of challenging traditional gender mores. Further, Davies refers to their gender choices as just that, â€Å"gender negotiations† (Davies, 2001, par. 3) in which both male and female â€Å"to conform to [the] ideals† (par. 3). of most modern societies. More, Davies explained of her work that she refers to â€Å"hir and s/he to challenge readers to [imagine] a subjectivity beyond the dichotomous her/his, she/he. The use of hir further signifies the possibility of a third gender not contingent on crossing from one normative gender to the other. Moreover, neither the Indonesian nor Bugis languages discriminate between gender† (Davies, 2001, endnotes). In this effort, Davies is attempting to define, categorically, the gender difference and non-discrimination that the Indonesian people show. As a gender/sexuality ethnologist, Davies’ research methods seem to comprise the study of the hierarchy within the society and the impact and effect of a chosen gender. Her fundamental stance included the major roles and duties of women, especially, and she defines how â€Å"the hierarchical order of a woman’s duties shows that only after a woman has married and produced children is it her duty to be a member of society. Indeed women may not be considered adults until they have married heterosexually† (Davies, 2001, par. 13). In this, perhaps, the failings of Davies, like Annette Weiner, can be blamed upon her feminist approach to her ethnology of the Bugis and their gender relationships. While her research does encompass the duties and roles of men as well, her main focus is upon the objectification of women and the shocking hierarchal implications (indeed there is some judgment, even in within the Bugis) of their chosen gender identities. Colin M. Turnbull wrote â€Å"The Mbuti Pygmies: Change and Adaptation† as a case study in cultural anthropology of the Mbuti pygmy hunter/gatherers of Zaire. His ethnology focuses on the social organization and environmental tasks and objectives of the pygmies in correlation to their relationship with their non-hunter/gatherer neighboring villages. Turnbull’s work is purely a historical outline of the location and social structure of the Mbuti pygmies in which he notes their settlement location, languages, hunting party structures, and hunting party jobs, like archer, spearman, etc (Martin, n. d. , par. 2). Turnbull discovered that â€Å"only political identity they have is in opposition to the village cultivators† (Martin, n. d. , par. 4) and the â€Å"relationship between the Mbuti and the villagers is maintained on several different levels, centering around trade† (par. 9). In this, Turnbull’s ethnography is highly focused upon one essential aspect of the Mbuti tribes. He does not go any deeper into their culture than trade and hunting, and little is mentioned about social relationships of women within the tribe itself. Indeed, like other ethnographers, Turnbull’s focused approach could be seen as a failing in that there is obviously much more to the Mbuti tribe than their hunting techniques and trade relationships. However, while there must be much more required to understand the Mbuti culture and people, Turnbull’s anthropological research shows, as a case study, and important and driving aspect of the culture. Evon Z. Vogt wrote â€Å"The Zinacantecos of Mexico: A Modern Maya Way of Life† as an ethnographic case study on the life, rituals, economics, and reproduction in Zinacantan. The main focus of his ethnography, however, is the Zinacanteco belief system and how their beliefs serve as the philosophy for their lives and rituals. Of the ethnographers, Vogt is one of the few to spend time in his documentary to relate his various field work methods and explanations. More, Vogt goes deeper into the Zinacantan society, remarking on the food that they eat and the clothing that they wear explaining that â€Å"virtually all women know how to weave the full range of clothing in the normal Zinacanteco costume; but a few items, like ceremonial clothing and the intricate blouses presented to godchildren, are often produced by specialists within the community† (Cancian, 1972, 14). Indeed, Vogt provides an incredibly detailed account of the Zinacanteco way of life, surveying it as closely and as in-depth as if he had lived within the culture since birth. In this, Vogt’s account seems personal and literally every aspect of the society and culture seems accounted for. While he spends a great deal of his ethnographic survey on the belief system, it can be seen from his studies that the religious ways and methods are the driving force for the Zinacanteco and that the most important aspect has been thoroughly covered. Finally, William F. Wormsley wrote â€Å"The White Man will Eat You! An Anthropologist among the Imbonggu of New Guinea† as a case study into the cultural and social structure of the Imbonggu’s, which includes such aspects as leadership, marital obligations, and even magic and religion. Wormsley is the most unique of the major ethnographers because he spends time focusing on the truth of documenting a tribe, and the reactions, emotions, and ideals of the anthropologist himself while attempting such an ethnographic study. Mostly, Wormsley’s work stands out among the rest because of his personal immersion in the culture and society. While the other ethnographers, especially Annette Weiner, documented their studies with a point of view, their attempts were to show the cultures and societies without much interaction, to show the society in its cultural bubble without outside influences and distractions. While Wormsley doesn’t impede the culture he is studying by inserting himself into the historical commentary, his immersion impacts a reader into understanding the trials and tribulations from the ethnographer’s point of view, and that makes for a unique and interesting read. Overall, William F. Wormsley, Evon Z. Vogt, Colin M. Turnbull, Sharon Graham Davies, and Annette B. Weiner are among the foremost ethnographers in the study of cultural and sexual anthropology. While their research has proven to be limited in the nature of what they encompass, all highlight the fields within their chosen cultures that they intended. And of them, Wormsley stands out as the ethnographer most immersed in his ethnographic study as he detailed the life and means of his own documentary. References. Alexy, A. (2002). Comparing Readers and TV Watchers :: essays research papers

Comparing Readers and TV Watchers In today’s society, one needs to be well prepared for the problems they will encounter. One might be offered drugs, or be faced with the decision of whether or not to breakup a friendship. How does one get prepared to deal with these types of situations? Reading books definitely will not help. Sure, one can get background knowledge on just about every topic from a book, but reading will not prepare you to deal with the outside world. Television is the best way to get a grasp of society’s problems at hand.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Readers believe that not only is reading a form of entertainment, but you can learn from it also. Readers are generally better writers; however, too much reading can make you an introvert. There are probably dozens of books that try to depict real life problems, but it’s hard to get the emotional feeling by looking at text. When watching Television, you feel what the character feels. Additionally, readers lack the verbal communication skills possessed by T.V. watchers. To prepare yourself for a job interview, would you rather read a book, or watch people be interviewed? By watching them, one can see how they visually present themselves, and how they speak and listen. That, you cannot learn from a book.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Television watchers have a tendency to be more extroversive. They are better verbal communicators, and they know how to present themselves to others. If you were to give a speech, the best way to prepare yourself would be to watch others, and take notes. Additionally, T.V. watchers can build vocabulary through listening to context on the television. When one watches T.V., they can share their experiences with most of America, since most Americans prefer television to reading. Thus, T.V. watchers will get along better with others. Lastly, T.V. sitcoms introduce all kinds of problems and solutions which can be adapted into real life situations.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   It’s quite obvious that reading will help one become more educated.

How to End a Relationship Essay

Ending a relationship with your partner is never an easy thing to do, but if one finds themselves unhappy in the relationship than the best thing to do would be to part ways. It is important to not force yourself to be in a relationship if you are no longer happy. Ending the relationship can be better in order to avoid further issues and heart ache. You owe it to yourself and your partner to call it quits if things aren’t working out. Ending a relationship can be difficult, but by utilizing these four essential steps; thinking things through, arrange to meet up in person, be honest, and being compassionate and understanding, you can assist the process for both you and your partner. First, make sure to think things through and decide if ending the relationship is what you really want to do. You will need to make sure to avoid impulsive actions that can lead you to hasty decisions that you will end up regretting. Make sure to give yourself time after a heated issue/argument in order to start thinking clearly. Once you feel more relaxed a list of pros and cons can be extremely helpful in assisting you through this difficult decision. While making your list, it is always important not to over think about the different scenarios and make sure to keep it simple. The list compiled should be used to help put things into perspective and allow a clear picture about the next phase that is needed. Second, give your partner the courtesy and respect of ending the relationship  with them in person. By being able to sit down face to face with your partner the communication of feelings and concerns/issues will become evident both in verbal tones and body gesture. If possible, avoid meeting up around special days; holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, because it would not be fair to ruin those days for them. It is also important to avoid locations that were of importance to both of you or overly crowded areas. Even though you already know how the end of your meeting will turn out, it is helpful to have a conversation to allow both persons the opportunity to release feelings. This might be the last time the two of you might be together so closure and honesty is needed for both of you to be able to move forward. Third, honesty is the most important foundation of any relationship, regardless of the state of the relationship. It is important for you to start the conversation and jump right into the reason for the meeting without beating around the bush. Be as honest, concise, and to the point as possible. Make sure to complete your full thought before allowing your partner the chance to speak. Create a positive, open environment in which you both feel at ease in saying anything that needs to be said in that moment. It is important at this step to list issues/concerns that you had with the relationship and this is where your pros/cons list can be useful. Make sure to be honest about the bad times, but also the good times as well. Choosing your words wisely will allow you to give constructive criticism on issues, being effective in getting your point across, and at the same time making sure to be gentle and considerate of your partner’s feelings. Ultimately, being compassionate and understanding will allow both of you to be helpful to each other to ease through the process of ending the relationship. Both of you will be experiencing hurt feelings, but in order to end things amicably you will want to do your best to be there for the other person in the moment. If needed, in the moment, be there to offer a shoulder to lean on for your partner. Guidelines regarding any further contact with each other should also be put in place so that it can assist with this new transition for your partner. Let them know that things will be okay and in due time they will see that the relationship had to turn out the  way it did for the benefit of both of you. At the end of a relationship you will have many emotions that will need to be dealt with in order to move forward. Knowing that the relationship has come to an end is only the start of the long process ahead. Allow yourself time to think about the relationship and whether it can be salvaged. When the relationship can no longer be fixed create a moment to speak to your partner in person. Going into that meeting you should be prepared to be honest and allow your partner to be honest with you as well. At the end of the relationship you and your partner might not be at the same point of the ending and it is important and helpful to assist them by being compassionate and understanding of their needs. By following these steps you can help transition through the end of the relationship and allow for growth that can assist both partners in their future relationships.

Globalization and Its Effects on Mexico Essay

Mexico has the size and assets which could contribute to wealth and prosperity within their borders. The nation has the second longest border with the United States, significant oil resources, and the 11th largest population in the world. Mexico underwent all the necessary free market changes to help support globalization despite initial resistance, but they are yet to complete the interior microeconomic makeover they drastically need. Mexico has many things working for them but continue to underperform when it comes to global power and economy, China out performs Mexico for low-cost manufactured goods and India is often the target for outsourcing jobs and services over Mexico (Biggs, Shiess). After sustained pressure from the United States and the International Monetary Fund, Mexico decided to change their global economic stance to one that supports the free market. They changed their economy to one based upon exports, they eliminated most tariffs while lowering others, attracted foreign direct investment and private state assets, and finally reduced government spending. These steps were taken at an effort for Mexico to join in on the economic benefits of globalization, but Mexico only finished half of the necessary adjustments necessary for economic prosperity. (Biggs, Shiess) Many residents of Mexico may blame their problems on issues such as the drug cartels, the lack of quality jobs, or lack of foreign investment. Although these ideas may contribute to the problems that control Mexico, they are not the true reason. After Mexico completed their globalization efforts by using the ideas of macroeconomics, they had only completed half the necessary adjustments to truly co mpete as an economic superpower in the world today.(BBC News) Mexico has failed in great part due to their stubbornness and interior corruption to evolve their nation from that of an above average Latin American Economic power, to that of one on par with most European nations, China, India, and the United States. The second half of the puzzle that Mexico is missing relies heavily on the ideas of microeconomics. Mexico never created the level playing field for companies within their country and is greatly powered by monopolies which ruins an economy due to lack of competition and innovation. For Mexico to begin to succeed in the free market needs to put resources into banks, education(specifically on technology), mechanisms which will support collaboration between competing companies, and most importantly new laws to disallow the monopolies which control Mexico’s economy. (Biggs, Shiess) Until these steps are taken Mexico remains a country which can be overwhelmingly difficult to do business in, which turns away the majority of investors, and people looking to expand companies into different countries. It is not a good sign when according to the International Finance Corporation Mexico ranks 75 out of 183 countries in the world for â€Å"ease of starting a business†. (IFC) Around the year 2000 when the globalization movement was fully set in motion, Mexico was going through an extreme change in their political stance as well. This was a major problem for Mexico, even though the economic changes which were drastically needed were happening outside Mexico’s borders it is a very difficult task of changing their political institutions at the same time of changing economic institutions. Mexico continues to stand where they are rather than take a step back to allow for future gains, for example Mexico continues to rely on their state owned oil giant Pemex instead of bringing in new companies and investors for an attempt at innovation and competition in their oil industry. (Biggs, Shiess) Until Mexico decides to take a small hit and clean house in regards to their current internal economic stance companies will continue to avoid Mexico at all costs. Startup companies need stability in a political and economic system, and until Mexico is willing to offe r that and put in place fair trade laws, better tax laws, and economic regulations they will continue down the same road. Mexico is greatly reliant on their petroleum exports; this has been called the Resource Curse by many experts. The problem lies in that when they started to nationalize their oil resources, they needed foreign investment to refine petroleum into oil as they lacked the local funds to do so themselves. This results in some economic benefits due to other countries purchasing crude oil for themselves, but the process remains to be quite draining on what could be the road to economic prosperity. Mexico needs to mine the crude oil, export it to outside nations where they can refine it and then re-import it as gasoline. (Biggs, Shiess) The biggest problem that their fossil fuel dependence will bring upon Mexico is that the country is relying on the industry, and because demand and prices are high Mexico has no reason to start new industries. Oil is a fossil fuel and resources are diminishing, and when they are gone Mexico will not be in even rougher shape than they are currently. Mexico is at the crossroads when it comes to their economy and what direction those in power want to take the country in. As of right now the globalization efforts have helped the Mexican economy but due to lack of funds and a change in political scenery at the same time Mexico was unable to fully capitalize on the free market. They may have helped their trading relationships with outside countries, but not enough was done within their own borders to disallow corruption and monopolies. Mexico is stuck in place until they take the necessary short term economic downfall to get the full rewards from globalization. With the constant changing of political motives, problems with drug cartels, and corruption the chances of new businesses starting up is slim. Without new businesses to inspire competition the economy will continue to rely upon oil to sustain the country’s economy, but eventually the oil resources they have will run out and lead to ultimate turmoil within Mexico. How to Break the News About Bad Grades to Your Parents

How to Break the News About Bad Grades to Your Parents If you are expecting a bad grade, or if you’ve just found out you’re going to flunk a class, then it’s pretty likely that you’re facing a tough conversation with your parents. It may be tempting to delay the bad news as long as you can, but that is a bad idea. You have to address this head on and prepare your parents for a shock. Don’t let your parents be surprised by bad news Procrastination just makes things worse in any situation, but it’s especially damaging in this situation. If your parents are surprised by a flunking grade, they’ll feel doubly disappointed. If they have to learn at the last minute or discover the news through a teacher, they’ll feel like there is a lack of trust and communication on top of the academic problem at hand. By telling them ahead of time, you’re letting them know that you don’t want to keep secrets from them. Schedule a meeting It’s hard to talk to parents sometimes- we all know this. Right now, however, it’s time to bite the bullet and schedule a time to talk with your parents. Pick a time, make some tea or pour some soft drinks, and call a meeting. This effort alone will let them know that you are taking this seriously. Acknowledge the big picture Your parents will want to know that you understand the seriousness of bad grades. After all, high school is the doorway to adulthood, so your parents will want to know that you do understand what is at stake. Understand that this is a time when you are laying the foundation for a successful future and communicate that view in your conversation with your parents. Acknowledge your mistakes Remember that everybody makes mistakes (including parents). The good news is that you can learn from your mistakes. Before you speak with your parents, make an effort to understand what went wrong in the first place. Take some time to figure out why the bad grade happened (and be honest about this). Were you overloaded this year? Did you take on too much? Maybe you had a problem with priorities or time management. Make a real effort to get to the root of your problem, then think of ways to make the situation better. Be prepared Write your conclusions and plans on a piece of paper and take it with you when you meet with your parents. Talk about your possible ideas. Are you willing to go to summer school? Maybe you should drop sports next year if you have to take a make-up course next year? Think about the steps you can take and be ready to discuss them. Your goal is to show your parents that you are willing to take ownership. Admit you screwed up or that you have a problem- if you did- and let your parents know that you have a plan to avoid making the same mistake in the future. By taking ownership, you are showing a sign of growing up, and your parents will be happy to see it. Be mature Even if you go in with a plan, you must be willing to receive other suggestions. Don’t go into the meeting with the attitude that you have all the answers. As we grow into adults, we sometimes learn to push our parents’ buttons. If you really want to be a grownup, it’s time to stop pushing those buttons now. Don’t try to get into a fight with your parents to blur the topic and transfer the problem to them, for instance. Another common trick that parents see through: don’t use drama to try to manipulate the situation. Don’t cry and exaggerate your guilt to generate some sympathy. Sound familiar? We all do things like this as we test our boundaries. The point here is, it’s time to move on and learn. Be prepared to receive news you don’t like. Your parents’ idea of a solution may be different from your own. Be flexible and cooperative. You can recover from any situation if you are willing to learn and to make the necessary changes. Make a plan and follow it!

The Long Telegram of George Kennan

The Long Telegram of George Kennan The Long Telegram was sent by George Kennan from the United States Embassy in Moscow to Washington, where it was received on February 22nd, 1946. The telegram was prompted by US inquiries about Soviet behavior, especially with regards to their refusal to join the newly created World Bank and International Monetary Fund. In his text, Kennan outlined Soviet belief and practice and proposed the policy of containment, making the telegram a key document in the history of the Cold War. The name long derives from the telegrams 8000-word length. US and Soviet Division The US and USSR had recently fought as allies, across Europe in the battle to defeat Nazi Germany, and in Asia to defeat Japan. US supplies, including trucks, had helped the Soviets weather the storm of Nazi attacks and then push them right back to Berlin. But this was a marriage from purely one situation, and when the war was over, the two new superpowers regarded each other warily. The US was a democratic nation helping put Western Europe back into economic shape. The USSR was a murderous dictatorship under Stalin, and they occupied a swathe of Eastern Europe and wished to turn it into a series of buffer, vassal states. The US and the USSR seemed very much opposed. The US thus wanted to know what Stalin and his regime were doing, which was why they asked Kennan what he knew. The USSR would join the UN, and would make cynical overtures about joining NATO, but as the Iron Curtain fell on Eastern Europe, the US realized they now shared the world with a huge, powerful and anti-democratic rival. Containment Kennans Long Telegram didnt just reply with insight into the Soviets. It coined the theory of containment, a way of dealing with the Soviets. For Kennan, if one nation became communist, it would apply pressure on its neighbors and they too might become communist. Hadnt Russia now spread to the east of Europe? Werent communists working in China? Werent France and Italy still raw after their wartime experiences and looking towards communism? It was feared that, if Soviet expansionism was left unchecked, it would spread over great areas of the globe. The answer was containment. The US should move to help countries at risk from communism by propping them up with the economic, political, military, and cultural aid they needed to stay out of the Soviet sphere. After the telegram was shared around government, Kennan made it public. President Truman adopted the containment policy in his Truman Doctrine and sent the US to counter Soviet actions. In 1947, the CIA spent considerable sums of money to ensure the Christian Democrats defeated the Communist Party in elections, and, therefore, kept the country away from the Soviets. Of course, containment was soon twisted. In order to keep nations away from the communist bloc, the US supported some terrible governments, and engineered the fall of democratically elected socialist ones. Containment remained US policy throughout the Cold War, ending in 1991, but discussed as something to be reborn when it came to US rivals ever since.

To address this comment, we should use common sense to judge which actions are morally permissible and disallow those that do not fit on the moral

Nuclear power plant Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 1

Nuclear power plant - Essay Example This is due to their devastating effects on the environment and people generally. Radiation exposure can also lead to DNA damage and this can result in dysfunction or cell death. Underground uranium mining is the most dangerous than other underground mining because uranium ore emits radon gas. This has led to miners in uranium ores developing small cell carcinoma a lung cancer. Even the decay product of uranium has been shown to be cancer causing agent which is a serious health problem. Employees in nuclear reactors and the surrounding society can be affected by radioactive radiation which can leak through the piping system or pressurizers. Radioactive substances released to the air or rivers leads to contamination which ends as a cause of cancer. Nuclear power is however clean because it does not involve projection of dust to the environment like in the case of fossil burning. Most power plants are located near a large water body like an ocean or a lake to get enough supply of water for cooling effects to expel heat from the reactor. The use of natural water bodies adversely affects the aquatic life e.g. fish, of the ecosystem under which heat has been released to because this heat can be the cause of anomalies in the sea or cause fluctuations in the river flow rates. This use of water bodies can be avoided through the use of cooling towers in the nuclear reactors which are located beside the reactors to cool the reactor. The civilians living near nuclear reactors should be properly educated to avoid responsible response during disasters. It can be described as healthy since they produce clean energy that does not pollute the environment while it’s used. Accidents in nuclear reactors are very rare but devastating when they happen. The worst nuclear reactor accident at Chernobyl nuclear plant in Ukraine was as a result of flowed reactor design and mistakes of the plant operators. It destroyed the reactor killing 30 people within 3 months and
